If you have a DIY or construction project that you want to complete, the best way to get it done is through dry hire machinery. When operating such heavy machines, including excavators, loaders, bulldozers and rollers, you must be extremely cautious.

These big heavy machinery can create dangerous situations. Serious injuries can occur when caution is not taken.

So, How Do You Stay Safe When Operating Heavy Machinery?

1.Good communication

Good communication between the ground worker and driver is essential. Hand signals are used to communicate between the two individuals. Ensure that you know what the hand signals mean. If you are working with more than one person, make sure the signal person on the construction site tells you where the other workers are. They should also wear high visibility vests so that the operator can locate them. Also, ensure that your machine has a warning signal. It will help warn the workers of the machinery.

2.Wear protective clothes

These machinery noise levels are very high. Ensure you wear earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing. You can also wear a protective hat.

3.Entering and exiting equipment

Never jump off the machinery. There are three points of contact for the operator to enter and exit the equipment. The three-point rule should be followed. That means have both feet and one hand or one foot and both hands in contact with the ladder access at all times when climbing on or off of the cab. Don't carry anything with you when ascending the cab.

The other safety precaution is never to enter or exit the equipment when it is moving or operating. Ensure that the equipment is shut off and parking brakes engaged.

4.Inspect the equipment before use

Before working or operating the machinery,  visually inspect it. Inspect the steering system and brake system carefully. Inspect the tyres and tracks for any damages and ensure the fluids levels are okay; engine oil and hydraulic fluid before you start.

5.Intended use only

Use the equipment for its intended work only. Don't use excavators as cranes or loaders to carry workers. Ensure your equipment is appropriate for its intended use. Also, don't overload and equipment. If your work requires a big excavator, get a big excavator, not a tiny excavator that you will overwork.

6.Seatbelt

Ensure your wear your seatbelt while operating the equipment.

7.Know your surroundings

Be aware of the area and surroundings. Ensure the area is clear and no personnel are close to the operating equipment. Keep your blind spots clear.
