How to Returf Your Lawn

If you have problems with your lawn and are thinking about returfing it, here's how to do it properly. Returfing your lawn will require site clean-up, dry hire of turf and mowing the area until it grows in properly. The following are the few steps involved in returfing your lawn.

Remove Old Turf

Before you can lay new turf, you'll need to remove your old lawn. The first step is to hire the proper equipment. You'll want a sod cutter and a tractor with a flail mower if it's not already built into your tractor for ripping up sod. Next, ensure your soil has been sufficiently tilled; many homeowners choose to use their rototiller for an in-depth mix, though a shovel and rake will also do. After breaking apart any rocks or roots that may be in your way, it's time to returf.

Prepare Soil for New Turf

The other thing you'll need to do is prepare your soil. This is a lengthy process but well worth it to get your lawn off on a good start and reduce weed growth throughout its life cycle—the more time and attention you put into preparing your soil, the less work you'll have. The soil needs to be prepared depending on where you live.

Soil that is too dense or compacted will not allow grass seedlings room to grow properly; conversely, sandy soils are difficult for grasses to hold onto once they've sprouted. Ideally, your soil should feel slightly moist to touch, not wet with a few inches of topsoil covering reddish clay subsoil; this environment is perfect for germinating grass seedlings without competition from weeds.

Install New Turf

After preparing your soil and removing dead grass, it's time to install new turf. The tools needed for installation include an edger, roller, shovels, and trowels. Be sure you also have good quality fertiliser and seeds. The best practice is to dry hire before you get started installing turf so that it lays flat when it goes down during turf installation. Finally, water often and rake so that it dries evenly throughout.
